Social Smart Club is held at 10921 82 Avenue North Delta BC V4C 2B2

Reach created the Social Smart Club as a bridge to build opportunities for children with autism to develop and maintain friendships. The Social Smart Club links children with other children in the same age group to meet once a week for one to two hours for ten weeks. During that time, with the guidance and support of a clinical consultant and a behaviour interventionist, the Social Smart Club will play games, socialize, have outings, share snacks, make crafts, and participate in group discussions. The topics of the discussions are chosen to address social and emotional life and development.

Children in the Social Smart Club  must be able to manage themselves safely and independently within a group of 4 children to 1 adult leader. Groups consist of 8 to 10 children.

Our objectives include:kfc_.jpg

Each week a variety of activities take place that includes the following:

Meetings and Greetings:
Salutations, small talk and conversation, joining in play or conversation with others, asking others to join in.

Circle of Friends Discussion Period:
Covers topics such as: identifying personal strengths, feelings in you and others, friendly and unfriendly behaviours, and how to deal with conflict, anger and social stress.

Arts and Crafts/ Projects/ Outings/ Videos:
Projects, outings and videos are designed to be related to the discussion topics.

Snack and Yak:
Each week a different child will be the snack helper. At snack time we’ll encourage and coach kids on how to engage in and respond to casual conversation.

Fun N’ Games:
Kids will engage in group board games and play activities that help strengthen social skills such as turn taking, sharing, and good sportsmanship.

While children attend the Social Smart Club their parents meet in a separate room to socialize, share information, and develop their own peer networks that mirror and support their child’s.
