The Reach Developmental Preschool South Delta is an inclusive preschool sponsored by the Reach Child and Youth Development Society.

Our goal is to offer children a stimulating environment with opportunities for social, emotional, cognitive and creative development, emphasizing the individual child’s awareness of his or her self, peers, family and society. We maintain a family-centered approach whereby parents and teachers work together to best address the needs of each individual child.

The preschool may serve up to 80 families at any one time. We operate an inclusive program, meeting the needs of children who require extra support and children who are developing typically. The children requiring extra support may include diagnosed syndromes, behavioural challenges, hearing and sight impairments, physical disabilities or children who are medically fragile.

Reach Preschool maintains a staff to child ratio of 1 to 5. All of our preschool teachers are provincially certified Early Childhood and Special Needs Educators and hold current first aid certificates. All employees of Reach have been cleared through the Criminal Records Review Board.

Peanut Controlled Environment:   We have children in our classes who have a severe peanut allergy.  We ask that NO NUTS or food containing nut products be brought to school for snack. Any other foods to be avoided will be posted on an “as needed” basis throughout the school year.

Newsletters/Parent Information Board:   Newsletters and monthly preschool calendars are sent out every four weeks to let you know what is happening in the following month at preschool.  Please check your child’s art pocket regularly for this information.

There is a Parent Information Board located in the front entrance of the preschool. We ask that you check it regularly for current notices or items of interest. Parents wishing to post notices on the Parent Information Board, should first check with staff.

Parent Participation: We have an open door policy at our centre.  If you wish to drop in to visit or observe your child you are free to do so at any time.  If you wish to speak to an individual staff member please let them know so a meeting can be set for a later date.  Staff will make arrangements to speak with you after program hours.  Teachers are usually not available for extended conversations during program times.

Parent Helpers:   Parent helpers are welcomed.  Sign up sheets are located on the bulletin board.

Parents can participate by preparing materials for the children to use or assist in setting up and cleaning up during the preschool day.

This is a great opportunity for you to spend time in the classroom, to participate with or to observe your child at preschool.

We ask that only one parent helper sign up per session.

Contact Teachers:   Each family will have a designated contact teacher at the school.  Should you have any concerns regarding your child please do not hesitate to speak to a staff member and they will pass the information on to your contact teacher.

Parent / Teacher Meetings:   Individual parent meetings are scheduled each year in the spring for children in typical spaces.  These provide opportunities for you and the teachers to share information about your child.  Parents are welcome to request a meeting at any time during the school year. Please arrange this with your contact teacher. The school will be closed on parent/teacher interview day.

Individual Education Plan (IEP): IEP meetings are held twice yearly for the children who require extra support.  Due to the length of these meetings, the school will be closed for up to 3 days in the fall and up to 3 days in the spring to complete all meetings.  These closures are included in the 10 annual professional development days.  Please see your yearly calendar of events for closure dates.  Every effort is made to balance the number of closures equally among classes.

September Preschool Hours:   During the first two weeks of preschool, the children attend for two hours only to allow for gradual entry.  Classes are from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and from 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.  You are welcome to stay with your child until you feel your child is ready to stay on their own.  We recognize that each child is an individual.  Please talk with the preschool staff if you are uncertain about when to leave. Group/circle time is eliminated from the daily routine during this time. 

Family Events:   Families are invited to attend a fall and spring family social night and a year-end picnic in June. Information regarding these social events will be available as they are planned throughout the school year.

Program Information/School Closures:   The program at  Reach Developmental Preschool South Delta operates through the year with closures for Christmas holiday (2 weeks), Spring Break (1 week) (as per the B.C. public school system), one week at the end of summer for program planning, as well as up to ten days each year for Individual Education Plan meetings for children requiring extra support, Parent/Teacher Interviews for children in typical spaces, program planning and staff training, etc..

In addition, we will be closed for statutory holidays.  The regular preschool program runs from September to June with an extended summer program for the months of July and August. 

Our preschool offers a language enriched program, supported by our Speech-Language Pathologist, as well as a high ratio of teachers to children.  These additional supports benefit all children in our program.
