RIDE for RESPITE Fundraiser

Langara college students Sophie Richards and Georgia Hoar’s biking fundraiser to benefit REACH Respite program was a huge success on Saturday, March 16, 2024. 39 participated and $1905 was raised !The bike ride from Captain’s Cove Marina to host Barnside Brewing, offered an afternoon of bike riding, snacks, beverages and community. REACH Foundation Board Director Laura Dixon was involved from beginning to end and offers the following insights:

” I was approached by two young women who are in the Langara Business Management Program who were enrolled in a Special Events business course. It is a higher level course that requires them to work with a team to create, plan and execute an event all within a few months. This is extremely ambitious for anyone but especially for full time students with part time jobs! The students were impressed with Reach’s Respite Care program and the concept “Ride for Respite” took off and the results were four times their expectations.  Thanks to all the local businesses who donated to the Silent Auction, the fabulous hosts at Barnside Brewing and the Ride for Respite Team. As a result, the Respite Program can be made even better for the young people who are enrolled.  We are very excited that Langara Business Management Program is doing this kind of experiential learning for their students as the non-profit sector benefits tremendously from the next generation’s input and energy. We are so grateful that they chose Reach.”

Georgia says, “After learning about REACH’s Respite Care Program, Sophie and I were inspired by how the organization uplifts individuals with developmental disabilities and fosters a supportive environment for every family member. We were lucky enough to get a tour of REACH’s facilities, where we saw firsthand all the different activities and resources that this organization provides for the community. We are extremely grateful for this opportunity; it has been so rewarding to work with amazing people from such a special program. We hope that moving forward there will be more recognition for Reach’s Respite Care program, and how truly important it is for the families and children in our community.”

Sophie offers her thoughts, “On the day of the event, Georgia and I were filled with nervous excitement. We hoped for a good turnout, but the support from our community exceeded our expectations. The generosity from local businesses and silent auction bidders alike was truly amazing. Witnessing the turnout, we felt such gratitude for the support, not just for us as students, but also in support of Reach’s Respite Care Program. This experience has been incredibly rewarding, and we hope that Ride for Respite helps to shine a light on the amazing work of Reach and its dedicated staff!.”

Overnight Respite Coordinator Rae-Anne Schneider said, ” Thank you so much Georgia and Sophie! Respite is a vital service that provides families with a temporary break from the challenges associated with caring for a child with a developmental disability, as well as fosters the opportunity for that child to grow new relationships and social connections.  The funds raised by The Ride for Respite will be put towards activities, equipment and emergency hours for families in need.”

Funding to REACH Parent Peer to Peer Group (Punjabi)
$7500

Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation supports Parent Peer-to-Peer Group

Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation provided $7500 in funding to REACH Parent Peer to Peer Group (Punjabi). Over the past 3 years, the parent support group has grown from 8 families to 87 families residing in Surrey and Delta participating. A majority of participants are not current Reach clients which indicates that this group is supporting the greater community .

Referrals come from parents within the group, service providers and families who have heard about the program in the community. Families have become comfortable sharing their journeys with the public and this also helps raise awareness. 5 moms have presented on local radio stations to share their stories in an effort to help others who have felt isolated and a number spoke at the group’s Christmas party.

Families are more comfortable meeting in person for social events and there is a desire to organize more which is a welcome development as families were more reticent when the group began. Most recently, they asked to organize a Diwali celebration. In addition, parents involved in the group have also taken the initiative to organize a two week summer camp for families in the group and secured funding from local business people and gurudwara’s for hiring of a bus, BI’s and entrance fees (Aquarium, science world, etc.) Peer to peer support groups foster an eagerness to help new families

Petro-Canada Caremakers Foundation donation to REACH Parent Peer to Peer Groups also provides educational sessions in Punjabi language on diverse topics such as Q&A Sessions on Autism & Developmental Disabilities, Mental Health, Understanding Anxiety and ADHD Treatments and Supports.

Lily’s Birthday Fundraiser for REACH!

The Cameron family visited us Dec.14, 2023 to present us with a big cheque from a little girl! Lily turned three on November 4th and  mom Michelle and dad Dan decided to do something very special to celebrate her birthday. They asked that friends and families donate to REACH instead of giving gifts in appreciation of the help that Lily has received in REACH’s autism program. 54 friends and family supported in a BIG way donating $1000 in total including a contribution from Lily, Michelle and Dan themselves. This generous donation is dedicated to the Reach Autism (ABA) program and we thank the Cameron family and their friends for their thoughtful support!

We are honoured to share a testimonial from the Cameron Family about their act of extraordinary generosity:

In the spring of 2022, my wife Michelle Cameron and I, Daniel Cameron, found ourselves on a journey we hadn’t anticipated, navigating the complexities of our daughter Lily’s development. Lily, at just over a year old, had been recommended for support through a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP). Little did we know that this initial step would lead us to the doors of Reach Child & Youth Development and set the stage for a transformative experience.

Our first challenge emerged when Lily faced difficulties in two different daycare settings. It became evident that her needs were unique and required specialized attention. Concerned for Lily’s well-being and development, our SLP suggested an Autism Assessment. This process involved collaboration with our Family GP and a child psychologist, leading us to ABLE in Richmond, BC.

In May 2023, the diagnosis arrived: Lily had Autism. The news brought a mix of emotions, but with it came the beginning of a supportive journey, thanks to the introduction of Reach into our lives. Sarah Nykon, a dedicated professional at Reach, became our guiding light. From the moment we met her in 2022, Sarah has been a constant source of support, offering invaluable resources and assistance.

Sarah’s introduction to Reach opened doors we didn’t know existed. Reach, an organization committed to child and youth development, embraced Lily with open arms. The continuous support and encouragement provided by Reach have been instrumental in Lily’s success.

Since our initial encounter with Sarah, Reach has been actively involved in Lily’s life, implementing an Autism-Specific support program funded by the BC government. This program has been tailored to address Lily’s unique challenges, providing her with the tools and resources she needs to thrive.

What sets Reach apart is not just the programs they offer, but the genuine care and understanding they extend to families. Lily is not just a case; she’s an individual with unique needs, and Reach has recognized and addressed those needs with utmost dedication.

The journey with Reach has been one of discovery and growth, not just for Lily but for our entire family. The organization has become an integral part of our support system, offering not only practical assistance but also a sense of community and understanding. Through Reach, we’ve connected with other families facing similar challenges, creating a network of shared experiences and mutual support.

As we reflect on our path so far, we are grateful for the support of Reach and the compassionate professionals like Sarah Nykon who have been by our side. Lily’s journey is ongoing, but with Reach, we feel equipped and empowered to face whatever challenges lie ahead. The organization has been a beacon of hope, turning what initially seemed like a daunting diagnosis into a story of resilience, growth, and success for Lily and our family. We would like to take this time to thank Lily’s current team consisting of the following wonderful and incredibly talented individuals: Pia Evans, Erin Harris, Gina Polisky, Gina Maslin, Andrea Wong, Alyssa Kowbel and Alyssa Grant have been as good to us as if we were family.

REACH Child and Youth Development Society’s Speech-Language Pathologists not only engage directly with children, they also collaborate closely with families, assisting them in finding practical strategies to support their child’s communication skills. This collaboration is vital, as illustrated in this video from the official Canada Helps website, showcasing the progress of three-year-old Cruz, featured alongside REACH SLP Joanne and his mother, Ray Win, who express gratitude for the transformative impact of speech-language therapy services. Supporting the REACH Gift of Speech initiative makes a lasting impact on what children can achieve, fostering lifelong differences in their capabilities.

Community Services Recovery Fund (CSRF)

REACH receives CSRF support

The Community Services Recovery Fund (CSRF) is a $400 million investment from the Government of Canada to support community service organizations, including charities, non-profits and Indigenous governing bodies, as they adapt and modernize their organizations.

Now more than ever, community service organizations play a key role in addressing complex social problems faced by many communities across Canada. Locally, five organizations received grants from the CSRF – Delta Community Living Society, Sahas Community Services Society, 140 Sports Association,  Burns Bog Conservation Society and Reach child and Youth Development Society.

At REACH, the CSRF grant received helped with technology upgrades that gave us the ability to conference and collaborate with staff and families to ensure that REACH can maintain accessibility, timely responses, and program designs that are top quality, sustainable, inclusive, and include the families, multiple therapists at once, and tailor to individual child needs fully.

Fortis for Families

In 2020, FortisBC made an initial three-year commitment to fund REACH SibShops program. This year, they extended that commitment for three more years. “The “FortisBC SibShops” Program now runs once a month from September to June,” notes Camille Netherton, REACH Associate Executive Director. “Knowing that we have FortisBC’s support for three more years makes a huge difference in terms of planning and organizing. Both the staff we hire for the program, and the families we’re serving have the comfort of knowing this is not a temporary program.” Waitlists for some of the government-funded behaviour support programs for children and youth with special needs can be extremely long. For families without the tools or resources to help their special child, the wait for help can be painful. When REACH became aware of the long waiting list, they developed a short-term program called Positive Connections, together with the Ministry for Children and Family Development, to help bridge the gap.

“One of the things I love about REACH is how responsive we are to the communities,” says Camille. “Positive Connections was developed at a time when there was a long waiting list for behaviour support programs – and there is still a long waiting list, so it’s needed just as much now as before.” Positive Connections is an intensive positive behavior support program for the whole family. It has three components: group learning for parents; in-home visits with a behaviour consultant; and SibShops, a program for siblings of children that have special needs diagnoses. “With funding from FortisBC, we were able to expand SibShops beyond the summer day camp program that we run in July and August, and make it a year-round program,” says Camille. “SibShops is so important because often siblings become caregivers later in life or have a lot of responsibility for helping the family with the child with the diagnosis,” says Camille. “We felt those kids needed some support, needed to feel connected and needed to know that they’re not alone.”

“In the program, we hear kids say things like ‘I thought I was the only person who had a special sibling’ or, ‘I know my mom and dad love me, but they don’t spend much time with me because my sibling needs a lot of their attention’. And we also have kids come in who are afraid of their special sibling. It’s amazing to see how much they learn through the program in a short period of time, and how much their attitudes shift towards becoming more understanding, loving and generous toward their sibling than they were before.”

In 2023, Fortis BC provided REACH with funding for a new program to support sc̓əwaθən məsteyəxʷ (Tsawwassen First Nation) families. “We like to take an integrated and inclusive approach to community investment,” says Joanne Hunton-Sehdev, Community & Indigenous Relations, Fortis BC. “We explore all aspects of a community and look for ways we can boost collaboration between groups by providing additional support. The FortisBC for Families Program will also provide that extra support for sc̓əwaθən məsteyəxʷ families.” Camille explains why the FortisBC for Families Program is so important and how it will work: “We’ve had our Reconciliation Action Plan at REACH for several years. We’re committed to learning, growing and doing our part towards Reconciliation. That includes being guided by our Indigenous partners to make sure that we’re assisting the Indigenous community in ways that’s meaningful to them.”

“This year, the FortisBC for Families funding will support a designated REACH behaviour consultant for Indigenous Communities to address potential cultural barriers which can limit access, critical services and supports. This program also provides education, planning and in-person support for children with extra needs and their families in partnership with sc̓əwaθən məsteyəxʷ.” “Before we had the FortisBC funding, this program wouldn’t have been possible,” Camille explains. “We just didn’t have the means to do it. Having FortisBC’s community support now gives us the flexibility to be responsive to the sc̓əwaθən məsteyəxʷ community.”

Envision Financial Donates $97,000to local charities

On December 15, 2021, Michael Voros, Branch Manager of Ladner Envision brought in a cheque for $24,073 to support REACH. Envision Financial, a division of First West Credit Union, pledged to donate $2 for each valid member vote cast online, by telephone or by text message—and members who voted were able to choose where they’d like their vote donation to go, from a shortlist of local charitable organizations. Because of an excellent member turnout for the vote, just over $97,000 was generated for local charities; however, First West topped up the total donation amount to $250,000. Reach Child and Youth Development Society (REACH) received a donation of $24,073 as one of the non-profits supported by this generosity. Here are the final donation totals in the area served by Envision Financial:

  • Sources BC: $25,693
  • Saints Rescue Mission: $23,083
  • Reach Child & Development Centre: $24,073
  • The Full Cupboard: $15,315
  • First West Foundation: $14,189

REACH Executive Director Renie D’Aquila reports that the funds will support counselling and mental health for families at REACH. “Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude to Envision  and First West Credit Union and its members  for such a significant donation  to REACH and our counselling program” she said.

Envision Financial

Envision Supports Program Equipment

Envision Financial just keeps giving to registered local charities! Right now, their Simple Generosity campaign is live and a wonderful opportunity exists to make #CommentsOfKindness and tag us on this Envision Facebook post and Reach Child & Youth Society will automatically be awarded $25. If you have a chance to do so, we thank you and also Envision for making this possible!

As a result of Covid-19, REACH experienced a drastic increase in the costs associated with program and service delivery. We have been providing both virtual and in-person services depending on children’s support needs and families individual circumstances. For virtual autism therapies, we have required materials that accompany children’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) so that families can continue interventions in their home.

Tools for skill development include behaviour modelling, acquisition and sensory processing. Also, our staff have been using iPads to deliver remote services to observe sessions and coach families. Staff need one iPad and each family requires two: one for observation and one for the parents to use to teach the child. Many of our families are not able to access the technology needed to communicate virtually nor the resources to purchase any. For in-person services, we require a continuous supply of PPE to ensure the safety of our staff, children and families.

The 2021 Community Response Grant funds that REACH received were extremely impactful helping ensure that children with extra needs continue to receive the critical support they need to reach their potential during these exceptionally challenging times. We are so grateful for Envision Financial and First West Foundation’s incredible support of REACH during these unprecedented times.

REACH receives funding from Delta Foundation

Reach Child and Youth Development Society (REACH) was supported by the Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund and Delta Foundation this summer because of COVID-19 impact on in-person therapy services.

REACH received a $25,805 grant in July from their Emergency Community Support Fund to help with virtual service delivery.

This funding was used for virtual learning aids in REACH Early Intervention therapy programs to help with service delivery during the pandemic.

“For parents with a child with special needs, this time is especially challenging,” says Development Manager Kristin Bibbs. “The funding received from the Delta Foundation, thanks to the Emergency Community Support Fund, has assisted REACH in ensuring as many vulnerable families as possible continue to receive the critical support they need to foster their child’s optimal development at home.”

We are very grateful for the special pandemic support from our sustained donors during 2020. In August, REACH received a letter from Port Gala Committee members DP World Vancouver, Global Container Terminals, Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and Western Stevedoring extending funds in light of COVID-19. The message that accompanied the gift is heartwarming:

“On behalf of the Port Fundraising Gala Committee, we would like to extend our most sincere thank you for your ongoing support to your community during this challenging time. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a global impact and we recognize that many non-profit organizations have been significantly affected by COVID-19.To support your organization during this challenging time, the Port Fundraising Gala Committee will be providing Reach Child and Youth Development Society with a one-time donation of $10,000. Funds will be distributed directly from the Port Gala Committee organizations. Thank you for your contribution towards the quality of life of residents living south of the Fraser River.”

REACH is one of the beneficiaries of the Port Fundraising Gala along with Harvest Project and Mission Possible non-profit organizations. This year, the gala did not take place for pandemic safety reasons and we are so appreciative of the Port Gala partners for supporting us regardless!

Vancouver Foundation
$50,000.00

Vancouver Foundation awards $50,000 Grant to REACH

We are thrilled to announce that Vancouver Foundation has awarded Reach Child and Youth Development Society with a Community Response Fund flexible operating grant of $50,000.00. REACH sends out profound gratitude for these funds that mitigate the losses to our CHOICES and ABA programs as a result of COVID-19. The Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) program is a skill building program that teaches functional skills to children with autism spectrum disorders. REACH CHOICES program encompasses a diverse range of options. Clients have access to Speech Language Pathologists, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists as well as Behavioural Consultants specializing in addressing challenging behaviours in children.

At the onset of restrictions to in-person service delivery, our team quickly developed an integrated approach to remain connected and offer telehealth virtual services to provide direct support to our families. This approach includes three levels of intervention: 1) Parent Support Training; 2) Behaviour Reduction; and 3) Skill Building. With support from Vancouver Foundation, we were able to continue to support vulnerable families to assist with challenging behaviours and work with parents to develop strategies to continue their children’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) within their homes.

As of June 17, 2020, we have resumed in-person services in REACH ABA and CHOICES programs. ABA  session start-up has been welcomed by most families and they  have signed up for service. Almost all Behavioural Interventionists have been recalled and are ready to deliver in-person service with specific COVID-19 protocols in place. Each staff member at REACH received a safety bag with PPE visor, masks, gloves and sanitizer assembled by volunteers June 10-12th, 2020 (photo L:R Karen Ostrom, Donna Grant, Sue Richards, Stella MacDonald).  Some aspects of remote sessions will be maintained –parent training component for teeth brushing or eating or using iPad to ask for a snack – it has proven very effective to coach the parent to do this and implement session goals at home because it empowers the parent.

CHOICES has begun to work with  ABA to amalgamate BI hiring/training and scheduling, which will provide efficiencies. In-person service provision has begun and there will be a place for virtual follow up / remote observation, and virtual education allows for higher participation from parents. In addition, CHOICES is offering virtual music therapy groups this summer (contact [email protected] for more information) including:

  • U CAN UKE – Learn how to play the ukulele! Uke CAN do it!
  • DISNEY FAN CLUB – Practice social skills and improve articulation through the magic of Disney music!
  • BUILD YOUR OWN BAND! – Make your own instruments using regular household items and then jam out with your friends all from the comfort of your home!

Sending a HUGE REACH THANK YOU to the Vancouver Foundation for supporting these initiatives and the families and children who benefit from them. We are indeed all in this together!

Envision Financial Donates $25,000 To Reach

Reach Child and Youth Development Society was grateful to recently receive a $25,000 grant from the First West Foundation – Envision Financial Community Endowment towards their Building for Children Together Capital Campaign. Added to another donation of $25,000 in 2012, as well as $2,000 from First West employees in 2014, this makes a $52,000 total contribution to Reach. “Envision and its employees have offered a myriad of support and volunteering over the years to take us closer to its ultimate goal of helping more kids,” states Renie D’Aquila, Executive Director, Reach Society.

The purpose of First West Foundation is to support initiatives that help create resourceful and resilient communities. The Envision Financial Community Endowment funding focus is on programs supporting vulnerable populations. Reach Society’s slogan is “Believing in Potential” and helps to transform possibilities into reality for children with special needs and their families. The relationship between First West and Reach is very much built on a foundation of shared values and purpose.

Municipal Hall Donates $1 Million To “Building For Children Together” Campaign

Delta has once again showed its support in a big way for the Reach Child and Youth Development Society. Delta council announced Monday that it had agreed to provide a financial contribution of $1 million for the society’s capital campaign to build a 21,600-square-foot support centre on 47th Avenue in Ladner. The Corporation of Delta has already provided the land, which is valued in excess of $1 million. Several directors and other members of the society were at Monday’s meeting and were elated with the news. “We’re just absolutely thrilled. It gets us that much closer,” said Barbara Wallick, chair for the Reach Charitable Foundation.

Executive director Renie D’Aquila also said she was thrilled and that the society is appreciative of Delta’s ongoing support. The society hopes to begin construction next spring by first demolishing the Kinsmen House at the edge of Memorial Park. The new building is estimated to cost $5.4 million, a figure that includes construction, contingency, furnishings and an outdoor playground. Reach has already raised around $2.6 million and secured another $100,000, specifically for the playground. The $1 million contribution from Delta gets the project that much closer to reality. Once built, the centre will be owned by Delta and leased to Reach.

The new centre will give Reach a much larger place to provide programs for youth with special needs. When the Kinsmen House is replaced, the Kinsmen Club, also a partner in the project, will use space in the new building. Reach’s current centre on 72nd Street in East Ladner, formerly a residence for mentally challenged youth, is clearly in a less than ideal location, cramped, antiquated and prone to flooding. The non-profit group, which has been providing services to youth and their families since 1959, serves hundreds of youths annually, saying children with special needs are at risk of being left behind without early support.
