Behaviour Consultant (BC)

For children with behaviour challenges and complex developmental needs, BC’s use a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) approach. BC’s:

• Help families understand what their child’s behaviour is communicating.
• Build communication, coping and self-regulation skills.
• Teach positive ways for children to get their needs met.
• Give parents practical strategies to use at home and in the community.

Speech Language Pathologist (SLP)

For children who need support developing speech, language, and interaction skills. SLPs:

• Build understanding and use of language.
• Help children communicate their wants, needs and ideas.
• Develop social communication and interaction skills.
• Give parents practical strategies to build communication during everyday routines and play.

Occupational Therapist 

For children who need support with fine motor, self-help and sensory regulation skills. OTs:

• Build hand and fine motor skills for play and learning.
• Develop self-help skills such as dressing , eating and toileting.
• Help children manage sensory needs and regulate their bodies.
• Give parents practical strategies to support their child’s skills in everyday routines.

Physiotherapist

For children who need support developing movement and coordination skills. PTs:

• Build strength, balance and coordination.
• Develop skills for sitting, standing, walking and moving.
• Support safe and confident movement during play and daily activities.
• Give parents practical strategies to build movement skills at home and in the community.

The therapists in our program work together in an integrated service model. The first step is to be connected with a Case Manager and the framework develops as follows:

Getting to Know Your Family

Your Case Manager begins the assessment process by learning about your child, your family and what is most important to you.

One Plan for Your Child

Your family and team develop one plan based on your child’s strengths, needs and your family priorities.

Working Together

Your team works toward shared goals, using consistent strategies across therapies and in your child’s everyday activities.

Building Family Skills

You learn strategies to use during everyday activities at home and in the community to teach and support your child.

Helping Your Child Grow

Working together gives your child more opportunities to build skills, use them in different settings and become more independent. 

Individual Support

Together, your family and  SLP, OT, PT and Behaviour Consultant develop practical strategies that fit into every day life. This support helps you:

• Strengthen your child’s learning, self-regulation, participation and independence.
• Build skills during everyday family and community activities.
• Help your child use new skills in different places with different people.

Groups for Kids

Children learn and practice skills through play and activities with other children. Groups provide opportunities to:

• Build Communication, self-regulation, play, social and emotional skills.
• Grow confidence and independence while practicing everyday skills, preparing for kindergarten and trying new experiences.

Parent/Guardian Groups

Parents and guardians learn practical strategies to teach their child new skills and support their development during everyday routines. Parent groups focus on helping parents:

• Teach self-help and independence skills.
• Support positive behaviour and regulation.
• Build health sleep routines.
• Put strategies into practice as home and in the community.

REACH is committed to provide accessible services. To ensure fair access to our Therapies Program we have outlined our entry, transition and exit criteria for you below.

Entry criteria:
Anyone may refer a child for services as long as the legal guardian has given verbal or written permission. Children must be residents of British Columbia, and living in Delta (catchment area). Children under 6 years of age who have been identified as having, or being at risk of, motor and/or speech, language, and communication delays, behavioural concerns, and/or difficulties with daily living skills are eligible for services.

Transition criteria:
Children may need to transition to a specialized program or services. Children who move out of Delta will be transitioned to a program in their new community.

Exit criteria:
A child will be discharged when:
• they reach the age of 6 years
• they have reached age-appropriate milestones – this will take place in conversations and agreement with the legal guardian.

Early Intervention therapy services are provided free of charge.
